Golf

Introduction

Welcome to The Dunes Golf Resort, one of the jewels of the beautiful Coromandel Peninsula. Originally designed by New Zealand golfing legend Sir Bob Charles, The Dunes has been a must-play course on the serious golfers’ itinerary for almost three decades. Originally a 9-hole course it was expanded to full 18-hole championship status 15 years ago and two years ago hosted an NZPGA pro-am event. The Dunes is a true golfing experience – bordering the tranquil Whangapoua Harbour and a beautiful 4km sandy Matarangi beach, the course is set in glorious surroundings, with sea and harbour views from most holes and the Coromandel Range and Castle Rock forming a spectacular backdrop. It’s sand base provides the ideal all-weather facility and when combined with the challenging layout, the course is one every golfer should put on their bucket list. The Dunes is one of the most picturesque courses in New Zealand today. It will test even the very best and, if the golf is only average, the walk is still fantastic.

The Course

golf-course:The par 73 course measures 6162m off the blue tees (slope 130), 5772m off the standard men’s tees (slope 128) and 5341m of the women’s tees (slope 126). For those lower handicapped women looking for an even greater challenge, we have also rated the men’s tees for women. The 349m, par 4 first is the signature hole with a good, straight drive important if you wants a chance of starting your round with a par. The views towards Mercury Bay are sensational, no matter what the weather. Holes three to eight have water features, as does the 17th while all except the 12th and 16th holes have out of bounds. The course is open all year round, so if you want to play one of New Zealand’s best kept golfing secrets “Come play The Dunes”

Cathedral Cove

Cathedral Cove is located at Hahei, just 10minutes drive from the famous Hot Water Beach. Foot access to Cathedral Cove starts at the top of Grange Road. Parking is at the Visitor Car Park on Pa Road (turn right just after entering Hahei).

During the summer months a shuttle service runs from the visitor car park on Pa Road to the start of the Cathedral Cove track. Alternatively you can walk from the car park around the beach to the start of the track which will take an extra 20mins. It is here that you can also access Gemstone Bay and Mares Leg.

Cathedral Cove Marine Reserve, Te Whanganui- A-Hei, covers 9 square kilometres and is New Zealand’s sixth marine reserve. It is administered by the Department of Conservation. Te Whanganui-A-Hei is part of a special area first claimed by Hei, a Tauira (teacher/skilled person) from the waka Te Arawa, some time around 1350 AD. On a northbound voyage from the Bay of Plenty to Hauraki, Hei chose the area around Mercury Bay to settle with his people. He proclaimed ownership by referring to Motueka Island as “Te kuraetangao-taku-Ihu” (the outward curve of my nose). It is said that he made this claim near the present day site of Hahei. Hei’s descendants still retain a strong ancestral and spiritual attachment to the area and continue their role of kaitiaki (guardians) of the bountiful resources within it.

The Martha project was the first major hard rock mining operation to be commissioned following the resurgence of the gold mining industry in New Zealand in the late 1970s. The Martha Mine is situated in the Waihi township, and the processing plant, waste rock embankments, water treatment plant and Favona Mine are located two kilometres away in a rural area. Because of its location, Waihi mining operations have received a high level of public scrutiny. This is reflected by the stringent conditions set for the projects.
